Artistic and General Director
Stage director, playwright, and musician, recognised as one of the Latin American artists with the greatest international presence. He founded and directs his own company, TEATRO DE CIERTOS HABITANTES, a benchmark for the Latin American avant-garde stage. In parallel, he has directed opera in highly prestigious theatres as well as large-scale productions. His creations have been successfully presented in more than 200 cities across five continents.
He has been honoured with multiple awards: the National Prize for Arts and Literature (the highest accolade granted by the Mexican government), the Fine Arts Medal, the Medal of Merit in the Arts, the Golden Laurel for best director at the Mess Festival in Sarajevo, and Best Visiting Director in New York City, amongst others. Important institutions have commissioned and co-produced his works, including the Edinburgh International Festival, Theater der Welt (Germany), Wiener Festwochen (Austria), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Germany), Kunsten Festival des Arts (Belgium), Writers Theatre (USA), Festival Internacional Cervantino (Mexico), the National Theatre Coordination, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, amongst others.
His professional artistic training as an actor and musician began at an early age. He is a director graduated from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica. He belonged to the Austrian group Carpa Theater. He was a founding member and singer of the ancient music vocal quartet Ars Nova, dedicated to the recovery of Latin American Baroque music, making various recordings and undertaking extensive tours in Mexico and abroad.
He is constantly invited as a teacher, lecturer, and juror, in his capacity as an expert in interdisciplinary creation and scenic research processes, both nationally and internationally. The publication Líderes Mexicanos has recognised him as one of the 300 most influential leaders in our country.
He is the founder of ARTBORETUM, a centre for the development of performing arts and community gathering.
